Our
spreader is made by a firm called Marshall from Aberdeen in Scotland.
It is of a design known as a "Rotaspreader"
.
This type of spreader was first produced in the 1960's and they are
a very general-purpose machine. The design means it can spread either
solid or liquid manure.

It
is powered by the tractor's PTO (see
the back of the tractor page) and runs at a PTO speed of 540 revolutions
per minute (RPM).
The PTO drives the small cog shown here which in turn drives the larger
with this chain. The speed is reduced by about 3:1 so the rotor shown
here which spreads the manure with the chains attached to it turns at
about 180 RPM
On the end of each chain there is a weight, which gathers the manure
and flings it out of the machine covering an area of about 3m wide at
once.
When
filling the "Lid" at the top can be raised by this hydraulic
ram to make filling easier.
The body or barrel of our spreader has a capacity of about 7 cubic yards
(Marshall are not metric) and given the weight of manure of approx 0.75
tonnes per cubic yard it is, adding the weight of the machine about
6 tonnes when full.
As you can see a simple but VERY effective design
