THE NATURE REPORT
August 2001

As August has been so wet it has caused an explosion in our fly population and they are a real pest to the cattle. Also other insects are on the move here is a picture of a grasshopper we heard along the cattle drive.

Last month I showed a tree which had fallen and was being cut up for firewood this picture shows some of the grubs that were living in the rotten wood they were about 30mm long. I assume by the holes in the wood they were eating it.

One night early in the month Simon got this picture of brown slugs on the trunk of the apple tree in the garden in April the great tits nested in that hole. If anyone can explain this activity email us and I'll publish it next month.

Fox cubs are now on the prowl and Smidge chased one out of the bracken in the gully last week. Our Buzzards have bred 3 chicks and they are all flying together with their parents. Paul has not yet managed a close up picture (webbies note: he couldn't get a close up if one bit him on the nose:-).

As the month ends the fruits in the hedgerows are beginning to ripen as autumn beckons.

See you next month PHIL.
