THE BUCKRAKE
Home page

Image of the BuckrakeThe job of buckraking is one of the most important during the silage making process as it is the driver’s job to pack the fresh grass into the silage clamp.

It is most important to get as much air out prior to sealing with the plastic sheet and therefore the grass must be “rolled” by the tractor’s wheels squashing the air out.

Tipping GrassRaking the GrassThese pictures show the grass being tipped and then carried into the clamp and stacked using the buckrake which in this case is fastened to the front of the tractor.

Sometimes they can be fastened to the back of the tractor but most contractors like Chris prefer a front mounted machine as imagine the strain of turning your head to see every trip up and down the grass pile.

Top of the Rollar CoasterBuckraking can be quite dangerous and it can sometimes make a rollercoaster ride seem tame.

We will see in six weeks when the silage has fermented whether the job worked (I’m confident it will) when we take the sheet off and put the second cut of silage on top of this the first.
