French vetenary students, Alix, Margot and DelpheneWe get many requests via the websites mail link and this one was from Alix, Delphene and Margot (pictured here) who are all first year Vet students at Lyon, France.

The three wanted to visit the UK for some vetinary practise during their February half term.

Alix had applied first and I had accepted but not wishing to disappoint the others we advertised in our vet’s monthly newsletter and placements were found for them at Phil Barbers and Alistair Cliff.

They all wanted to work with dairy cows and we all were happy to help.

Alix de-horning a heiferHere is Alix in action dehorning a heifer this rather gory picture is of the removed horns and I have a special plan for these which will be shown in about 18 months time.

Besides the usual farm work we all arranged a day out with one of our own vets. I commented that Alix might be lucky enough to see maybe a difficult calving and she saw just that.

Guy trimming a cows footVets do trim cows feet but going out with our expert Guy she got to see around 100 cows feet trimmed over the day here he is Guy in action.

AI semen storage flaskNext on the list was a trip out with John the AI technician who is quite camera shy but she did get this picture of the storage flask.

Reaseheath the county agricultural collage is home to the world famous Moet pedigree cattle herd owned by the Genus cattle breeding company.

Calf hutchLuck saw an open day that week so Phil Alistair and I took the students for a tour something neither of us had actually done ourselves.

We looked at the adult cattle plus these calves which they keep in hutches outside.

Very interesting but wow the value of some of these cattle made our heads spin.

Margot trying on armourCheshire is famous for two products Cheese and Salt and we visited the salt museum here is Margot trying out some armour.

From right to left Alix Margot and DelpheneThe two weeks having flown by we all met up for a meal and here are the three girls not covered in muck or wrestling cows.

We ALL enjoyed the visit both farmers and students. I suspect it may not be the last we see of them.
